The “Germination Station” has been designed with 4 locking lid adjustments for venting, a way to lock the lid open while your working inside and a hinged drop down front panel for access. The drop down front panel allows for the “Germination Station” to be an ergonomic waist high gardening station. The “Germination Station” can be set on a deck or patio. The soil box can be filled with soil and used as your garden space typical of an apartment/condo/roof top/urban dwelling. This unit can also be utilized as your “Germination Station”. Using a layering system very similar to a commercial nursery, you will be able to have even more control of soil and air temperatures. We start with a 4” layer of course bark on the bottom of the box, then lay a piece of landscaping material over the bark (cut out 4 to 5 inches larger than the dimensions of the box) over the bark, spread a 2” layer of pea gravel (two 20 pound bags) over the fabric, lay a 4’x2’ heat mat over the gravel, and top it off with a 2” layer of playground sand (two 20 pound bags). The heat mat is connected to the regulator and the temperature probe is submerged into the sand or the soil of one of the planting containers. The regulator can be set from 68 to 98 degrees and because of the bark, gravel, and sand, the desired temperature will be retained longer without the continual cycling of the regulator/heat mat. This layering system helps conserve heat and energy by heating a small space and maximizes the growth of your seedlings by regulating soil and air temperatures.
